Sick Visits Q & A

What are sick visits?

Angel Kids Pediatrics uses sick visits to diagnose and treat acute illnesses and minor injuries.

Children are more susceptible to contagious diseases because their immune systems are still growing and developing. If your child gets sick and their symptoms don’t improve, contact 904-224-KIDS(5437).

What types of health problems do sick visits treat?

Angel Kids Pediatrics uses sick visits to treat various health problems, including:

  • Common cold
  • The flu
  • COVID-19
  • Bronchitis
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Ear infections
  • Pneumonia
  • Rashes
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Food intolerance
  • Minor injuries, like cuts, scrapes, or stress fractures
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

What do sick visits involve?

Angel Kids Pediatrics tailors sick visits to your little one’s needs, however, most are similar.

First, your child’s provider reviews their medical charts, results from any recent lab tests, and asks about their symptoms, including when they started, and if they improved with any treatments already given, and if there is any improvement.

Next, your child’s pediatrician completes a physical exam. They listen to your child’s heart and lungs, look in your child’s ears, nose, and throat, palpate your child’s abdomen, and order lab tests or cultures. If necessary, the team might also order diagnostic imaging, like X-rays or an ultrasound, to check for fractures or soft tissue injuries.

After determining the source of your child’s discomfort, your provider will use any collected information to find the best treatment plan for your child.

What can I expect at the end of a sick visit?

Angel Kids Pediatrics makes a diagnosis at the end of your child’s sick visit. Then, your child’s provider takes time to explain the diagnosis and go over the various treatment options. They also answer any questions you or your child have.

Depending on your child’s needs, the team might recommend:

  • Topical creams or ointments
  • Prescription medications
  • Minor in-office procedures (like ear lavage)
  • Home care (i.e., rest and drinking plenty of fluids)
  • Referrals to a specialist

It’s important to help your child follow their provider’s instructions, so they can feel better fast. If your child’s illness is contagious, they might also recommend taking some time off from school.
